How to Hire a QA Engineer in 2026: A Guide for Startups
Based on 1,199 open QA jobs on QA Job Board, November 2026.
If you are a startup hiring your first QA engineer, hire a mid-level engineer who can automate, not a junior manual tester and not a QA manager. Write a job post that names your stack, shows a salary range and says clearly whether the role is remote. Then test candidates on a real piece of your product instead of trivia questions. The rest of this guide explains why, using what 769 companies hiring QA right now actually ask for.
What the QA hiring market looks like right now
Before you write a job post, it helps to know who you are competing with. On November 6, 2026, QA Job Board tracked:
- 1,199 open QA and software testing jobs from 769 companies.
- 402 of those jobs were posted in the last 7 days.
- 92% of the jobs are remote or remote-friendly.
- Only 17.8% of job posts publish a salary.
Most of these employers look like you. Of the 769 companies, 587 (76%) have exactly one open QA role. Only 44 companies are hiring four or more testers at once. QA hiring is mostly small teams adding one person at a time, so a good candidate is usually choosing between several similar offers.
Step 1: Decide what kind of QA engineer you need
"QA engineer" covers very different jobs. The titles in our data show how employers split the work:
| Role title | Open jobs |
|---|---|
| QA Engineer | 312 |
| QA Automation Engineer | 209 |
| Senior QA Engineer | 155 |
| Software Tester | 134 |
| QA Analyst | 86 |
| SDET | 64 |
| QA Manual Tester | 39 |
| QA Lead | 27 |
For a startup with no QA function yet, three options are realistic:
- QA Engineer (mid-level) with automation skills. This is the default choice. They can test new features by hand, write the first automated regression tests and set them up to run in CI. Most employers hire at this level: 692 of the 1,199 jobs (58%) are mid-level.
- SDET or QA Automation Engineer. Choose this if your product already has a test suite that is slow or flaky, or if your developers write tests and need someone to build better tooling around them.
- Senior QA Engineer. Choose this if you are in a regulated area such as fintech or health, or if QA is going to become a team within a year. A senior hire can set up the process that later hires will follow.
What not to do: do not make your first QA hire a junior tester. Only 50 of the 1,199 jobs (about 4%) are junior roles, and there is a reason for that. A junior tester needs someone to teach them how to test, and in a startup with no QA there is nobody to do it. Hiring a QA manager first is also usually a mistake. A manager without a team will spend months writing process documents instead of finding bugs.
Step 2: Set a salary range you can defend
Most QA job posts hide the salary, which means a post with a clear range stands out. These are the advertised salaries from the 214 job posts that published a range, converted to USD per year:
| Level | Lower range (25th pct.) | Median | Upper range (75th pct.) | Posts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Junior | $65,000 | $83,000 | $98,000 | 15 |
| Mid-level | $73,000 | $102,000 | $115,000 | 98 |
| Senior | $100,000 | $119,000 | $132,000 | 46 |
| Lead / Manager | $98,000 | $138,000 | $155,000 | 55 |
The junior row is based on only 15 posts, so treat it as a rough guide. QA Automation Engineer posts have a median of $108,000, a little above the mid-level median for all roles.
These numbers lean toward US salaries, because US pay transparency laws make US companies more likely to publish a range. If you hire in Europe, Latin America or India, expect lower figures. For the full breakdown by role, see our article on what QA job posts actually pay in 2026.
A practical rule: if you want an engineer who can automate from day one, budget near the 75th percentile for their level. Strong automation candidates have options and will not take the median offer.
Step 3: Name your stack in the job post
QA engineers decide quickly whether a role fits their skills, and they do it by looking for tool names. These are the tools most often mentioned in the 1,165 QA job descriptions we could analyse:
| Tool | Share of job posts |
|---|---|
| Selenium | 29.4% |
| Playwright | 25.2% |
| SQL | 23.9% |
| Jira | 23.2% |
| Postman | 20.2% |
| Cypress | 17.7% |
| AI / LLM testing | 11.3% |
For programming languages, Python appears in 25.3% of posts, JavaScript in 20.9%, Java in 19.4% and TypeScript in 14.3%.
Two takeaways for a startup:
- Use the language your developers use. If your app is written in TypeScript, ask for Playwright or Cypress with TypeScript. Tests written in a different language from the product are harder for developers to read and fix, and they tend to get ignored.
- If your product has AI features, say so. 11.3% of QA job posts already mention testing AI or LLM features. Candidates with this experience are still rare, so name it in the title or the first paragraph.
We cover the tool data in more detail in the most in-demand QA automation tools in 2026.
Step 4: Write a job post that QA engineers will read to the end
A good QA job post answers the questions a tester will ask before they apply:
- What is the product, and who uses it? One or two sentences. Testers want to know what can go wrong.
- What exists today? Be honest. "We have no automated tests and developers test their own work" is useful information. Good candidates like building from scratch, as long as they know that is the job.
- What will they do in the first 90 days? For example: map the critical user flows, automate the top 20 regression cases, add tests to the CI pipeline, and set up a bug triage routine with the developers.
- Stack and tools. Language, test framework, CI system, issue tracker.
- Salary range and location. State whether the role is remote and which countries or time zones you can hire in. With 92% of QA jobs remote-friendly, "remote" alone is not enough detail.
- Interview steps. List them, with how long each one takes.
Keep the requirements list short. A post that lists 15 tools as must-haves puts off strong candidates who know 10 of them, while weaker candidates apply anyway.
Step 5: Decide between full-time and contract
Most QA jobs are permanent: 992 of the 1,199 jobs (83%) are full-time and 173 (14%) are contract roles. A contract QA engineer can make sense if you need help for a specific release, an audit or a migration. For ongoing product testing, a full-time hire is usually better. Most of the value of a QA engineer comes from knowing your product well, and that takes months to build.
Step 6: Run a practical interview
A simple interview process for a first QA hire:
- Screening call (30 minutes). Ask about a bug they found that others missed, and how they found it.
- Exploratory testing exercise (45β60 minutes). Give them access to a staging version of your product, or a feature you know has bugs. Ask them to test it while thinking out loud and to write up two or three bug reports. You will learn more from this than from any question list.
- Automation exercise (60β90 minutes, or a short take-home). Ask them to automate one real flow in your stack. Look at test structure, how they wait for elements, and how they handle test data, not only whether the test passes.
- Team conversation. Include a developer. A QA engineer who cannot work well with developers will not improve your quality, however good their tests are.
Move quickly. 402 new QA jobs were posted in a single week, so good candidates rarely stay on the market for long. Aim to finish the whole process within two weeks.
Where to find QA candidates
General job boards give you a lot of applications, many of them from people with no testing experience. A specialist board reaches people who already work in QA. Browse the remote QA jobs on QA Job Board to see how other companies describe similar roles and what salaries they offer, then write your post so it compares well.
Checklist before you publish
- One clear role: mid-level QA engineer with automation, unless you have a specific reason to choose otherwise.
- A salary range near the market median, or near the 75th percentile if you need automation from day one.
- Your real stack, in your developers' language.
- Remote policy with countries or time zones.
- A 90-day plan and a short, practical interview process.
