Position Summary
The Lab Test Engineer supports fire testing and certification projects for firestop systems by coordinating test programs and listing activities with UL and other third-party certification agencies. This role manages fire testing projects from initiation through final approval, including test planning, technical documentation, and listing development.
The Lab Test Engineer plays a key role in supporting firestop product development and certification programs by coordinating testing activities, preparing technical documentation, and supporting listing publication. This position emphasizes project execution, technical documentation, certification coordination, and technical support for new firestop systems and products.
Key Responsibilities
β’ Initiate and manage fire testing and certification projects from project setup through final approval and close-out
β’ Work with UL and other certification agencies to define project scope and coordinate project reviews and approvals
β’ Coordinate test schedules and project milestones with laboratory staff and engineering teams
β’ Track project status, comments, and action items to ensure timely progress and closure
β’ Travel to UL and third-party laboratories to coordinate and conduct fire testing projects
β’ Review test plans, assemblies, drawings, and procedures for compliance with applicable standards and project requirements
β’ Support firestop testing activities including through-penetration, joint, and perimeter fire containment systems
β’ Assist with fire test preparation including review of test assemblies and installation requirements
β’ Support laboratory testing activities and witness testing as required
β’ Compile, review, and finalize fire test reports, data packages, and supporting documentation for certification submittals
β’ Prepare and organize technical documentation required for certification projects
β’ Maintain project documentation in accordance with laboratory quality procedures
β’ Maintain accurate records of projects, listings, and supporting test documentation
β’ Support preparation, publication, and revision of certification listings based on approved test data
β’ Review certification listings for technical accuracy and consistency with approved test reports and project scope
β’ Address certification agency comments, clarifications, and non-conformances related to test reports or listings
β’ Track certification projects to ensure timely completion and approval
β’ Conduct competitive firestop system analysis to support testing strategy and listing development
β’ Evaluate competitor listings and test configurations to identify opportunities for new firestop systems and listing expansions
β’ Support development of new firestop listings that expand market opportunities
β’ Provide technical training and guidance to sales teams on new firestop listings and product applications
β’ Support rollout of new products and listings by preparing technical summaries and application guidance
β’ Assist sales and technical services teams with interpretation and application of firestop listings
β’ Maintain project and listing records in accordance with laboratory quality procedures
β’ Support laboratory audits and witness testing from a project coordination and documentation perspective
β’ Assist with documentation and corrective actions as required for laboratory compliance programs
Minimum Qualifications
β’ Bachelorβs degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or related engineering discipline
Preferred Requirement
β’ 2β5 years of engineering experienceΒ
β’ Experience with fire testing, construction materials, or building productsΒ
β’ Experience working with certification agencies such as UL or IntertekΒ
β’ Experience with technical documentation and engineering reportsΒ

Work Environment
β’ Combination of office and laboratory work
β’ Travel to third-party laboratories as required (approximately 10β20%)
