Senior QA Engineer

Are you the kind of QA engineer who enjoys digging deep into how payment systems really work — from transaction authorization to settlement — and making sure every step behaves exactly as it should?

We’re looking for a Senior QA Engineer who thrives on testing complex payment systems and transaction flows. You’ll join the Card Rails team, ensuring the reliability and quality of the infrastructure that powers card-present (POS) and card-not-present (eCommerce) payments across Africa.

This role sits at the intersection of legacy stability and modern automation, where you’ll help shape a shift-left quality strategy, build intelligent test automation, and validate payment lifecycles across acquirers, card schemes, and merchants.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• You’ll design risk-based test strategies for complex payment systems
• You’ll validate end-to-end payment lifecycles across multiple transaction scenarios
• You’ll build and maintain automation frameworks and CI/CD test pipelines
• You’ll test acquirer integrations, payment routing logic, and failover behaviour
• You’ll collaborate closely with engineers to implement a shift-left quality approach
• You’ll use logs, metrics, and traces to identify and diagnose transaction issues
• You’ll help define payment quality metrics such as authorization success rates and failure patterns

OUR REQUIRED EXPERTISE

Technical Expertise

• Strong experience in QA / Test Engineering (7–10+ years)
• Experience testing payments, fintech, banking, or transaction-heavy platforms
• Deep understanding of card payment flows across card-present and card-not-present channels
• Hands-on experience testing ISO-8583 message flows
• Experience with API testing tools (Postman or similar)
• Automation testing experience with tools such as Cypress, K6, or similar
• Experience working with CI/CD pipelines (GitLab or similar)
• Experience testing distributed systems running in cloud environments (AWS preferred)
• Understanding of EMV transactions and payment device certification is highly advantageous

 Problem-Solving & Ownership 

• Able to design structured test strategies for complex systems
• Comfortable validating high-volume transaction platforms
• Able to investigate complex transaction issues across distributed systems
• Takes ownership of quality outcomes across the payment lifecycle

Collaboration & Communication

• Works effectively in remote-first engineering teams
• Collaborates closely with developers, product teams, and external partners
• Communicates complex technical and quality issues clearly
• Mentors engineers in quality practices and automation approaches
