Senior Automation QA Engineer

Ciklum is looking for a Senior Automation QA Engineer to join our team full-time in Ukraine.

About the role:

As a Senior Automation QA Engineer, become a part of a cross-functional development team engineering experiences of tomorrow, you will be responsible for designing, developing and executing both manual and automated tests that ensure the reliability, performance and correctness of backend services and API integrations. The engineer actively participates in all Agile ceremonies, collaborating closely with developers, product owners and stakeholders to refine requirements, identify risks, embed quality practices early and help drive continuous improvement across the entire software development lifecycle. This position blends hands-on test creation and execution with strong analytical thinking, problem- solving- and an ownership mindset that ensures robust and scalable test solutions.

Responsibilities:

• Design, implement and maintain automated API test frameworks using Java, REST Assured and related technologies to ensure consistent, scalable and maintainable automation solutions
• Create and execute manual and automated test cases for RESTful services, microservices and backend integrations ensuring full coverage of functional and non-functional behaviour, workflows and edge cases
• Collaborate fully in Agile ceremonies (refinement, sprint planning, stand-ups, reviews, retrospectives), providing test insights, estimating effort and influencing team decisions around quality
• Create and manage API mocks and service virtualisation assets using MockServer to support early, reliable and isolated testing across multiple environments
• Collaborate closely with developers, product owners and stakeholders to clarify acceptance criteria, identify risks and embed testability into designs, ensuring effective end-to-end- delivery of backend services
• Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines, ensuring reliable, fast feedback loops and contributing to pipeline improvements
• Analyze test results to produce clear reporting, raising high‑quality defects with appropriateseverity and business context, clear reproduction steps and supporting evidence, helping the team to understand root causes and drive continuous quality improvements
• Demonstrate strong ownership of manual testing activities, rapidly analysing requirements, designing and executing exploratory and scenario‑based tests, and making informed decisions on when and how to transition coverage into automated API tests, ensuring fast feedback without compromising quality or maintainability
• Actively chase defect progression with development teams, retesting fixes, and ensuring defects are appropriately closed in line with agreed quality standards and release timelines

Requirements:

• 4+ years of professional experience in QA Automation using Java, REST Assured
• Solid skills in Java and OOP
• Experience with implementation of automated testing for project and system
• Experience with continuous integration processes and tools (Jenkins, Teamcity, or similar)
• Experience of working with version control systems (e.g. GIT and others)
• In-depth knowledge of test automation approaches and procedures
• Proficiency in scripting/programming languages for test automation
• Experience with how automation tests sit within CI/CD pipelines and automated releases
• Familiarity with test management and defect tracking tools
• Experience implementing and championing best practice testing approaches and shift-left testing concepts
• Deep expertise in quality assurance methodologies, including test strategy design, planning and execution across the full software development lifecycle
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on root cause analysis and continuous improvement
• Strong communication skills for collaborating with developers, product owners and stakeholders to define testable requirements and quality goals
• Ability to mentor and coach team members in quality engineering practices
• Understanding of Agile/Scrum
• Commitment to documentation, knowledge sharing and building reusable assets
• Adaptability to fast-paced, agile environments and evolving technologies
• Proactive approach to identifying risks and proposing mitigation strategies
• Good English skills – Upper-Intermediate and above

Desirable:

• Experience with API test automation of microservices-based applications
• Knowledge of BDD approaches (Cucumber)
• Knowledge of programming languages, such as Java/Python would be a great plus
• Good Knowledge of SQL (PostgreSQL or similar)
• Hand-on experience with Docker
• Some knowledge of AWS services is a plus
