• Location:   Abilene, TX 

• Pay:           $50/hr

• Schedule:  Day shift, 10 hours/day, 50 hours/week (days of work week may change - may require night work on occasion)

 

Position Summary:

Our Client is seeking a Tier 3 (Senior) QA/QC ISP Technician to support ongoing maintenance, break-fix activity, troubleshooting, testing, and quality assurance within live data center environments in Abilene, TX. This role will work in and around active fiber circuits, live cables, and production infrastructure, where precision, discipline, and adherence to process are essential.

The ideal candidate is a senior-level fiber technician with 6-7+ years of relevant experience in data centers, central offices, NOCs, carrier facilities, or other high-availability network environments. This individual must bring a methodical OTDR process, strong troubleshooting ability, and hands-on experience performing testing, cleaning, inspection, remediation, and QA/QC work without jeopardizing active services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced break-fix, troubleshooting, and maintenance on inside plant fiber infrastructure in live data center environments.
  • Work safely around active circuits and live production cabling while following all change-control, MOP, and site access procedures.
  • Conduct and interpret:
    • OTDR testing
    • Optical power meter readings
    • Light source testing
    • Connector inspection and validation
  • Follow strict fiber cleaning, inspection, and re-inspection protocols prior to mating, rework, or remediation.
  • Identify, isolate, and resolve physical layer issues including:
    • Link loss
    • High attenuation
    • Dirty or damaged connectors
    • Fiber path discrepancies
    • Patch panel or jumper issues
    • Documentation mismatches
    • Identify missing/incorrect labeling  and make corrections
  • Perform QA/QC checks on fiber installations, routing, terminations, labelling, testing results, and closeout documentation.
  • Investigate and resolve issues identified within the data center environment and complete corrective work to restore service integrity.
  • Support ongoing maintenance and infrastructure reliability efforts across structured cabling and fiber plant components.
  • Read and interpret:
    • OTDR traces
    • Test reports
    • As-built drawings
    • Rack elevations
    • Patch schedules
    • Route documentation
  • Document findings clearly, update records accurately, and escalate complex issues with actionable technical detail.
  • Support junior technicians as needed by reinforcing proper testing methods, connector handling, cleaning standards, and troubleshooting discipline.

Required Qualifications

  • 6-7+ years of hands-on experience in fiber optic installation, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
  • Prior experience in data centers, NOCs, central offices, carrier hotels, or similar mission-critical telecom/network environments.
  • Demonstrated experience performing break-fix work in live environments around active cables and production infrastructure.
  • Strong working knowledge of inside plant fiber systems, including trunks, jumpers, cassettes, patch panels, cross-connects, and structured cabling infrastructure.
  • Proven expertise with:
    • OTDR
    • Optical power meter / light source
    • Fiber inspection scope
    • VFL, as applicable
  • Strong QA/QC orientation with high attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
  • Ability to follow a methodical OTDR troubleshooting process and make sound remediation decisions in high-availability environments.
  • Ability to work a daytime schedule of 10 hours per day, 5 days per week on-site in Abilene, TX. Ability to be flexible with work days/hours as needed.

Preferred / Desired Qualifications

  • BICSI TECH or equivalent advanced structured cabling credential. BICSI describes the TECH certification as suited to technicians performing highly technical installations and diagnostic testing on structured cabling systems and network components.
  • FOA CFOT (Certified Fiber Optic Technician). FOA identifies CFOT as its primary certification for fiber technicians with broad knowledge and skills across fiber design, installation, and operation.
  • OSHA 10 for construction or equivalent site safety training. OSHA states Outreach cards are basic hazard-awareness training and are often used by employers, though not universally mandated by OSHA standards.
  • OSHA 30 for lead-level or senior field personnel
  • Manufacturer-specific fiber testing or structured cabling certifications
  • First aid / CPR, lift, ladder, or client-specific site access training, if required by the facility
